Time for city to boost its industrial culture

As one of the oldest cities in Tamil Nadu, Madurai never lacked trade or industrial activity. It is one of the biggest markets for almost all southern districts with agricultural produce, consumer products and groceries transacted. On the industrial front, Madurai is the hub of plastic and rubber industries, and of papads and other food products.

But it is always felt that in spite of its huge potential, Madurai falls short of becoming a major industrial hub for southern Tamil Nadu, as Coimbatore is for the western part of the state.

One of the reasons for the city lagging in the area is the absence of an industrial or business culture. Industrial units have to undergo transformations on the organisational, behavioural and functional fronts in keeping with the changing times.

In view of this, the business information centre of Madurai district tiny and small scale industries association (MADITSSIA) has come out with a year-long course, 'Organisation growth training programme' under its BIC-PromoIND culture project for industries.

Director of MADITSSIA - BIC R.Arangannal said it was an exercise to take industrial units to the next level by improving industrial culture in the units.

"It will be an ongoing programme at four levels where participants have to attend one day's training in a month. Starting from this August, we will have it round the year till next August," he said.

Level 1 training will be for managing directors and chief executive officers, level 2 for managers and technical officers, level 3 for supervisors, while level 4 will be for auditors and human resource personnel.

Only 20 companies will be allowed for the training. The company may have to spend Rs 20,000 for the training. "We need to work on this industrial culture where we have to tune the employees of our industrial units, motivate them to get involved in the growth of their companies," Arangannal said.

Cultivation of pulses promising in Madurai

While scarcity of pulses and mounting prices of the commodity in the market are causing consternation in the administration, there is good news from districts. At least 5,218 hectares have been covered under pulse cultivation in Madurai district alone. Agriculture department officials have set a target of 9,700 tonnes of pulses production in the current season in the district. Officials feel the prices would fall once harvest begins.

Scarcity of pulses in the market came up for discussion at the farmers' grievance redressal meeting at the collectorate here and many farmers urged the administration to encourage cultivation of pulses. Farmers' leader M Pandian said a push to pulse cultivation could benefit both farmers and consumers.

Addressing farmers, district collector L Subramanian said the National Food Security Mission (NSFM) had shortlisted Madurai district to promote pulse cultivation in the state. It was progressing well, he said. So far, rain has been favourable in the month of October. He urged the farming community to enrich their knowledge about pulse cultivation and also avail government assistance.

NSFM consultant S Radhakrishnan said the organisation was promoting cluster demonstration method in pulse cultivation in the district. Farmers from blocks like Thirumangalam, Kallikudi, Kallupatti, Chellampatti, Sedapatti and Usilampatti are encouraged to cultivate pulses like green and black gram (urad dal) under cluster demonstration. They have covered 1,200 hectares under this method - 400 hectares each for green gram, black gram and green gram as intercrop in cotton - and nearly half of the targeted area was covered at present. Sowing of pulses as intercrop in cotton field would start next month, he said.

Farmers under cluster demonstration are given subsidies on seeds, seed treatment chemicals, bio-fertilisers and nutrients. "The standing crop is healthy and farmers are anticipating 450 kg of pulses per acre as yield. We can assure that pulse prices, especially urad dal price, will come down once harvesting commences after January", Radhakrishnan said.

Agriculture department officials also said that they have promoted bund farming of pulses especially green gram in paddy fields. Bund farming is a method where farmers cultivating paddy sow grams in the boundaries of paddy fields. During harvest time both paddy and grams mature, enabling farmers to reap double benefits. Out of 9,000 hectares of paddy cultivated for this season, pulses cultivated in the bunds amount to 500 hectares. Thus, green gram production will be bountiful, they said.

During the meeting, the farming community also raised issues like difficulties in getting crop loans for cultivation.

Club to launch portal with travel information on Madurai district

Madurai Travel Club will soon launch an exhaustive portal on the sights and sounds of the district for tourists and residents to explore.

Speaking about project on Sunday, S. Sundar, president of the club, said that they wanted to curate information from resources who were experts in the history and heritage of the city and make it available online.

“Apart from well-known spots, there are many villages and places in the district which are of historical significance and interest to the tourists. Since there is very less information available about them, these places are not considered much by the tourists,” he said.

While a lot is being done to improve infrastructure for the tourists and maintain heritage sites, there was a need for a dedicated interface to effectively connect them, Mr. Sundar added.

The travel club was also working on an exhaustive map and handbook of the city, which would detail the places of tourism and heritage interest. The club planned to make the map available at all major bus stops and hotels.

On the occasion of World Tourism Day on Sunday, the club organised an interaction by G. Vasudevan, past president of the club, on the opportunities in the hospitality industry with college students.

“Since the theme for the day is ‘One billion tourists, one billion opportunities,’ the club has decided to go to colleges and speak to the students about career opportunities in the travel industry, which offers a lot of scope,” Mr. Sundar said.

More than 50 students from 14 city colleges participated in a travel quiz on the theme of ‘Know your Tamil Nadu’ and were given prizes by Collector L. Subramanian.

This was the second edition of the quiz conducted by the club.
